Carol Hall, Hello? Are You There?, wire mesh, collage, photography, acrylic paint, mixed media, 18" x 24"

American, b. 1959, playing from Seattle, WA, USA

I have studied with many different artists at many different schools. I have exhibited and sold my art. Finally, at the age of 54, I have arrived at the place where listing this stuff doesn’t matter anymore. I just make art because I have to… I can’t not. And either you like it and get it or you don’t. Either way is fine with me!

Thoughts on the Telephone process

Participating in “Telephone” was much more to me than making a piece of art. I thought it would be fun and interesting which it was. What was surprising and somewhat unsettling to me was how it highlighted my isolation as a visual artist. I found myself craving connection and conversation with the artist whose work I received. I wanted to know them, to stay up all night talking about the experience of playing “Telephone," to talk about the loneliness of making art… It was such a paradox because at the same time, I felt like a part of something much bigger than myself and part of an international community. It was an odd duality to “sit with.” I can’t wait to see the other work that was produced for this project.
