Looking for a Solution

I found a book
of the American Civil War
and erased all
the battlefield faces
with a blunt eraser.

White circles
replaced mother's eyes
and father's lips
and grandpa's noses.

White circle heads
fought other
white circle heads
to the death.

Then I drew an
equals sign (=)
on each face.

An equals sign
on a white circle
looks just like
a person with no eyes
and expressionless lips.

A person whose
lips are blunted
and tired
by an attempt
to constantly correct
an unbalanced equation,
someone who hopes
for an unimaginable end.

The expression sat
the exact same
on the living
and the dead.
