Carly Whitaker is an emerging digital practitioner based in Johannesburg, South Africa who specialises in digital interactive media. She is an artist, researcher and lecturer. She completed her BA Fine Arts (Honours) in 2008 which focused on mixed media and performance within a digital space and textiles which culminated in a show at Museum Africa, Johannesburg. She then resided in London where she travelled and worked for two years. The exposure to complex digital exhibits and experiments encouraged her to return home to do an MA in Digital Interactive Media which she completed in early 2012. The main focus of her practical was wearable technology and social media while her theoretical focus was on South African digital art in relation to the Altermodern. Since finishing her studies she has been lectured at Vega School of Branding, Wits University and the University of Pretoria where she enables students to develop both conceptually and theoretically. She is currently extending her practice and theoretical research into new areas, with specific focus on the digital as an artistic medium in South Africa. She is currently starting her PhD in wearable technology and soft textiles.

Thoughts on the Telephone process

I thought it was an incredible process and really enjoyed every moment of it. Such a simple, yet complex idea which allows people from all over the world to interact. I would love to participate in it again.
